On the program for our final concert of the season is Serenade, Op. 7 by Richard Strauss, Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto No. 3 in c for Piano and Orchestra, featuring Cristina Valdés, piano, and Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 43.
Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 has long been regarded as the ideal for a Romantic symphony: it encompasses moods that range from peaceful to heroic, and concludes in a blazing victory of triumph over struggle. Similarly, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, the "darkest" of his seven concertos, takes performers and audience into a complex emotional world that yields hard-won joy at its exultant conclusion.
