The Ensemble of Oregon Presents: Magnificent Mr. Telemann
Laura Beckel Thoreson, mezzo-soprano, and a Baroque ensemble will perform a selection of works by Georg Philipp Telemann.
When Telemann issued his cycle of cantatas, Der Harmonische Gottesdienst in 1725-26, he was already one of the leading cantata composers of his time. These works, unlike the more familiar cantatas of Bach, are written for solo voice, violin and continuo, and are constructed as miniature gems.
Telemann's collection of Twelve Fantasias for Viola da Gamba Solo was published in Hamburg in 1735 and were considered lost until an original print was found in 2015 by the musicologist François-Pierre Goy.
Telemann was among the most prolific composers ever and among his 3000+ works are many sonatas for various solo instruments and combinations of instruments. Two such sonatas will round out this concert of works by a much neglected master composer.
Performers: Laura Beckel Thoreson, mezzo-soprano Toma Iliev, violin Adaiha MacAdam-Somer, cello Chris Engbretson, harpsichord
