John Harbison, one of Collage's most venerable friends, served for a while as the ensembles music director and, most importantly, has given us all deeply communicative and lasting music. In honor of his 80th birthday, a milestone that the Boston musical community celebrates, Collage performs two very contrasting Harbison works: an early work that reveals a less familiar side, music rooted in the Germanic world of Roger Sessions; and, from nearly forty years later, his urgent setting of intense poems by Louise Glück. Within the framework of these two works, music by three composersall new to Collage concertsenriches the already rich offerings: Melinda Wagner's mellifluous Wick, Jeffrey Mumfords delicate a garden of flourishing paths, and Nick Omicciolis visceral push/pull.
