John Dearths Millers Band
Sunday September 9th will bring many Charlottesville jazz fans a chance to see for the first time one of the areas finest ensembles--John D'earths "Miller's Band." For longer than anyone admits to remembering, local composer and trumpeter John D'earth has held court at a notorious late night hang every Thursday night at Millers Restaurant on the he downtown mall. But only the young at heart and those without day jobs have been privileged to see this collection of amazing jazz talent from across the state due to the post 10:30 pm start time. Now the Charlottesville Jazz Society offers a prime time chance to catch this group when they perform at 7pm at UVa's Brooks Hall.
Though the band has gone through many personnel changes since its early days with D'earth's late wife, vocalist Dawn Thompsons unique and powerful contributions, the current lineup flouts some of the best young talent out of the Richmond scene, blending with D'earth and Charlottesville's favorite bassist Pete Spaar.
Longtime band member JC Kuhl will pair his tenor sax with special guest, New York City resident Pureum Jin on alto sax, creating, along with D'earth's trumpet, a potent front line.
Joining Spaar in the rhythm section is highly sought-after Richmond drummer Devonne Harris, who also leads his own nationally known group Butcher Brown as their keyboard player. Rounding out the group is the extraordinary young pianist Garen Dorsey, a graduate of Albemarle High Schools award winning jazz program.
