In spite of increasing acceptance of transgender identities, trans community members still face intense stigma, violence and barriers to participation. Many service providers and community leaders have good intentions about trans inclusion  and, with a deeper understanding and expanded toolbox, they can build on those intentions to create truly trans-inclusive practices and policies. This workshop is for anyone who is motivated to build their capacity to more effectively support trans people in their professional and community contexts.

Through a lively combination of presentations, small- and large-group discussions, practical exercises and collaborative problem-solving, participants will:

- Gain understanding of trans identities and experiences
- Examine personal, organizational, and community barriers to inclusion
- Develop strategies to support trans people in everyday interactions and in their professional roles
- Plan next steps to put their allyship into action, while staying in touch with the needs and priorities of trans communities

*Important accessibility note: For the health and safety of presenters and participants, please come fragrance-free. If you have an accessibility need (such as screen reader-friendly handouts, etc.), please let us know so that we can plan ahead to accommodate everybody.*

This training is approved for 6 Continuing Education hours by the National Association of Social Workers, Wisconsin Chapter.

The sliding-scale registration fee operates on the "honor system," to keep the workshop accessible to people with a range of means. We trust you to select the price category that's fair for you.

For those eager to take the work even further, there is a Trans/forming Allyship Part 2 scheduled for January 25, 2019. This first training is a prerequisite, so sign up now to make sure you'll be eligible!

This training is offered with the generous support of the UW Credit Union.

About the trainer: Davey Shlasko is an educator, author and consultant who has been working on transgender community issues since 2000. Davey's recent and ongoing work includes consulting with numerous K-12 schools, colleges, and human service providers to improve trans inclusion; co-designing and leading a community-based study group focused on racial justice organizing in predominantly white, rural areas; co-designing and leading a community-based cross-class dialogue circle with ACT for Social Justice; and co-editing Readings for Diversity and Social Justice, 4th edition. Davey teaches as a lecturer at UW Madison in Gender & Women's Studies and at the Smith College School for Social Work, teaching critical theory and transgender studies to MSW students. Davey is the author of Trans Allyship Workbook: Building Skills to Support Trans People in Our Lives.
