RAC Presents Amit Peled, Casals' Cello
Israeli cellist Amit Peled is returning to Occidental! Kit Nuestadter, Redwood Arts founder, introduced to him to our series 13 years ago when he was a young, upcoming cellist. The love affair between him and our audiences was immediate and has continued over the years. Now world famous, Mr. Peled has graciously agreed to make his fifth appearance in our concerts. He will be playing Pablo Casals historic cello, a Gofffriler ca. 1733, presented to him by Mrs. Marta Casals Istomin, widow of Maestro Casals. Mr. Peled will perform both pieces for solo cello and others with pianist Noreen Polera.
From the United States to Europe to the Middle East and Asia, Amit Peled, is a musician of profound artistry and charismatic stage presence, acclaimed as one of the most exciting instrumentalists on the concert stage today. At 6'5" tall, Peled started life as a basketball player and was called "larger than life" when he enveloped his cello. Amit often surprises audiences with the ways he breaks down barriers between performers and the public, making classical music more accessible to wider audiences. Mr. Peled is a Professor at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University.
Mr. Peled has performed as a soloist with many orchestras and in the worlds major concert halls. Some of the recent highlights with this historic cello include the culmination of a 20 city U.S. recital tour at the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts in Washington D.C., a recording of the Schumann Cello Concerto with the Washington Chamber Orchestra, an extensive tour with his two chamber music groups, The Tempest Trio and the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio. Mr. Peleds extensive discography includes critically acclaimed CDs on the Naxos, Centaru, and Delos Labels. His recent release of Casals Homage which features the legendary 1915 Pablo Casals program was a best-selling feature on the online iTunes Store! In 2017, he recorded the unknown music of Nadia Boulanger, which was awarded him a Grammy nomination!
Pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera is a regular recital partner with Mr. Peled. She ranks among the most highly regarded chamber artists, performs in centers around the world and was the winner of the Accompanying Prize at the Eighth International Tchaikovsky Competition. Her mastery of the complete cello-piano repertory is widely-known, as is her dedication to performing the works of living composers. She has appeared with Yo-Yo Ma and Leonard Rose.
