Season VIII: 2018-2019 Season Tickets
FROM GHETTO DOORS TO PALACE GATES: JEWISH MUSIC IN THE ITALIAN COURTS
The eighth season of Ensemble VIII opens with music by the Italian Jewish composer Salamone Rossi. Jewish Music in the Italian Court features Rossi's secular Italian madrigals and sacred Jewish music (set in Hebrew) whose musical compositions stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Italian giants Monteverdi, Wert, and Viadana.

HANDEL'S MESSIAH (COMPLETE)
For the first time since 2012, Ensemble VIII will present Handel's Messiah with period instruments. Experience the complete oratorio in the vibrant and detailed clarity that Handel would have expected with streamlined forces, expert execution, and the brilliant timbres of the Baroque instruments he himself conducted. This concert is generously sponsored by Ellen and David Berman.

SACRED AND PROFANE: A GERMAN ITALIANATE'S SONGS OF LIFE AND LOVE
From the 16th to 18th centuries, eager composers from Germany and France would journey from their native lands to Venice and Rome to study with the great Italian masters. Credited with solidifying the Italian practice within a uniquely German style, Heinrich Schütz's Cantiones Sacre and Italian Madrigals collections are masterpieces of harmonic genius and thrilling vocal sonority.

WHEN HEAVEN IS WEDDED TO EARTH: FRANCO FLEMISH MUSIC OF SPRINGTIME
A contemporary of the legendary Josquin des Prez, Antoine Brumel is one of the most influential composers of the Franco-Flemish school of composition. Bridging the gap of the rhythmic complexity of medieval period to the smooth imitative style of the late Renaissance, Brumel's 12-voice Earthquake Mass transports the listener to another realm with sounds that wed heaven to earth. Featuring additional music by early and late Franco-Flemish composers Dufay, Ockeghem and Josquin, this concert promises to reveal Brumel's compositional genius in converging multiple styles into one unique and brilliant sound.
