Patrick Johnson and Joel Neely
Patrick Johnson will be performing alongside Nick Butitta & Kyle Melancon at Dyson House Listening Room with very special guest Joel Neely, on Saturday, July 14th, in a reunion show of music & storytelling.
Johnson, formerly of Dash Rip Rock, Poor Harvey, Kristin Diable, and Tabby Thomas' bands, released his second solo album, "Monsters in the Clouds", last month, which is a follow-up to 2014's "Last River Drive-in". Monsters has been receiving frequent airplay on ALT 92.3's "The Roux", broadcasting out of New Orleans. Johnson was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame as a member of Dash Rip Rock with Kyle Melancon in 2011.
Opening the show will be Joel Neely, original guitarist/vocalist for several bands from the 1960s and 70s, including The Shepards, Jimmy and the Off Beats, Isosceles Popsicle, and The Lively Arts Quintet. While a member of Isosceles Popsicle, the band was fortunate enough to have their music receive airplay on American Bandstand.
Johnson and Neely share and unique back-story that spans over 26 years.
After several years performing as a professional musician, Neely left the music business in 1985 to open a martial arts school in Baton Rouge. Johnson became one of his students in 1992 at the age of 16.
Neely and Johnson worked together as Instructor/Student, then as Employer/Employee until 1999 when Johnson left to finish his degree and pursue a career in music.
Over the years, Neely owned and operated several martial arts schools in South Louisiana (as many as 5 at once), and eventually sold all but one, which is located on Coursey Boulevard.
Neely never ended his musical career, as he frequently plays, and has decided to return to the stage in recent years.
Johnson and Neely met up again at Johnson's CD release show and decided to put together a musical extravaganza that the two never would have thought of as possible before now.
