Jamie Laval & Ashley Broder
Winner of the 2002 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship, Jamie Laval was recently heralded in Scotland as "A new star for the Old World" (FiddleOn Magazine). The Olympian newspaper reported, "A fantastic fiddler, Laval captures the essence of Celtic sentiment and yearning."

One of the premier Celtic violinists on the international music scene today, Jamie Laval consistently creates rapt audiences with his intensely passionate performances that run the gamut from tender and melancholy to wildly jubilant. Major performances include the Freight & Salvage, Club Passim in Boston, the Northwest Folklife Festival's Fiddler Showcase in Seattle, the Scots Fiddle Festival in Edinburgh, and a private appearance for Her Majesty the Queen of England.

In the recording arena Jamie is widely respected for his solos on the movie soundtracks Wild America, Finding Home, Emmy-nominated theme for the TV drama Everwood, and for his participation in Dave Matthews CD Some Devil.

Jamie's solo CD Shades of Green has received unanimous critical praise and nationwide radio airplay, eliciting reviews such as, "tune after tune evokes an ancient tradition of Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. Fiona's Waltz is one of the most moving fiddle pieces I've heard in a long time." (Albany Democrat Herald)

Jamie's music making is born out of his Scottish and Irish heritage. After his student years at the Victoria Conservatory of Music he traveled extensively, immersing himself in a wide variety of musical styles including classical, jazz, and folk. Jamie now resides in Asheville, North Carolina and performs throughout the U.S. with mandolinist Ashley Broder.

Ashley Broder hails from Camarillo, CA and is a two-time winner of the Western Open Master Picker Championship. There is an effortlessness about Ashley's playing. Whether it be a virtuoso mandolin solo break, a languorous cello line, a fancifully crafted original composition, or a clear-toned tune from her fiddle, her music spins out like a sinuous ribbon of pure fun. Ashley routinely forays into blues, jazz, bluegrass, Old-time, Irish, classical, and Brazilian music. She has been an instructor at the Mandolin Symposium and in 2004 collaborated with world-reknown Mike Marshall in the creation of his Mandolin Method books.

At the age of eight Ashley came home from school after seeing a demonstration of musical instruments and announced that she wanted to take violin lessons. After a year of conventional training with the local violin teacher, Ashley began studying with Charl Ann Gastineau who smartly combined classical and fiddle music into her regime. With foresight that ultimately proved to be a pivotal milestone, Charl Ann encouraged Ashley to simultaneously learn mandolin.

For the next several years Ashley competed in local, state, and national fiddle and mandolin competitions, winning the Western Open Master Picker Championship in 2003 and 2004.

After high school, Ashley went on to major in music at Moorpark College where she studied cello with Stephen Custer of the L.A. Philharmonic and violin with Diane Gilbert. During this time she kindled a growing interest in classical composition, all the while teaching violin and mandolin privately and in class settings. In 2005 and 2007 she served on the faculty of the Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, CA. She also assisted Mike Marshall in the preparation of his mandolin method books.

That same year Ashley met Celtic violinist Jamie Laval and spent the ensuing six months forging a new duo style, rendering the traditional Celtic music of Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, and Quebec with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world. The pair now tours together full-time throughout the U.S., Canada and Scotland.
