SERENADE TO MUSIC: Schubert and Vaughan Williams
Our concert is a celebration of musical beauty. Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music (1938) sets text from Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice that compares music to the movement of celestial bodies, a testament to the beauty of music itself. In Mass No. 5 in A Flat Major (1822), Schubert pays homage to music as the highest art through this masterpiece. Both pieces feature orchestra and Portlands top soloists: Lindsey Cafferky McMahon, soprano; Laura Beckel Thoreson, alto; Les Green, tenor; and Damien Geter, bass.
