Helene an Opera @ Europa event
Helene is the first opera for which Saint-Saëns wrote his own French libretto, which is based on the classic story of Helen of Troy and Paris from Greek mythology. This petite opera (1 hour) is performed in 2 acts in French with super titles and features a Greek Chorus.
The opera premiered at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in Monaco on 18 February 1904 and was plucked from obscurity in 2008.
The story tells of Paris, a Trojan prince, coming to Sparta to marry Helen, whom he had been promised by Venus. Paris had named Venus as the most beautiful of the goddesses, earning the wrath of Athena and Hera. Vénus tries to persuade Helen to abandon King Menelaus and to follow her heart and marry for love.
Meanwhile, Athena/Pallas warns Helen of the dreadful events that will ensue if she abandons Sparta for Troy. She pleads with Helen to be the dutiful princess and marry for country and honor.
Helen heeds the words of Venus, not Athena/Pallas, and sets sail with Pâris in an ecstatic embrace thus starting the Trojan War.
This is the last of a 3 season petite operas to be performed at Europa Village Winery. This European-style winery's charm adds ambiance to these unique productions. Wine can be added as part of your ticketing price.
