"Zan" Screening: Film Explores U.S. Military's Threat to Endangered Okinawa Dugong
One night only: Join the Center for Biological Diversity for a screening of "Zan", a groundbreaking documentary about Earth's most endangered marine mammal -- the Okinawa dugong.

Using breathtaking underwater footage, the film explores the dugong's plight and the struggle of people in Okinawa, Japan, to protect these gentle manatee relatives.

"Zan: In Search of the Last of the Okinawan Dugong" examines a planned U.S. military airbase that would destroy crucial dugong habitat and wipe out the last members of this imperiled species.

The film will be introduced by Center attorney/activist Miyoko Sakashita and researcher Fujika Ariarakawa.  Ms. Ariarakawa, who was born and raised in Urasoe, Okinawa, will discuss the psychological impacts of U.S. and Japanese militarization and colonization on generations of Okinawans.  Ms. Sakashita will discuss the dugong's role in Okinawa's indigenous culture and how Bay Area residents can defend these amazing animals.

The Center and other American and Japanese conservation groups and Okinawan citizens have sued the U.S. military to compel a full consideration of the airbase's impacts. The 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals last year affirmed that the lawsuit could proceed.
