String Quartet No. 14 "Death and The Maiden"                              Franz Schubert

The American String Quartet,  internationally recognized as one of the wold's finest quartets,  will open the Festival's season, offer audiences a chance to experience extraordinary music-making in an up close and personal setting.

A highlight of the program will be the world premiere of a new arrangement of Charles Tomlinson Griffes Poem for flute and string quartet. Linda Chesis will join the Americans for the first-ever performance of this new arrangement of Griffes's original work, which was written 100 years ago this year.

Two contrasting string quartets, Debussys String Quartet in G minor and Schuberts Quartet No. 14 (known as Death and the Maiden), round out the rest of the program.

"Though composed almost 200 years ago, the dramatic, mpassioned writing of Schubert's Death and the Maiden continues to move listeners today. Whether they are hearing it for the first or the hundredth time, listeners are invited to experience anew the drama of this beloved work", says  Dan Avshalomov, the American String Quartet's violist.

About the Festival:

Founded in 1999, the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has been bringing world-class chamber music performances to the Cooperstown area for 20 years. The festival has featured performances by the Tokyo String Quartet, the American String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Kurt Elling, Tim Fain, Bill Charlap, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, Mark OConnor, the Sonia Olla Flamenco Dance Company, and many more.

Celebrated graphic artist Milton Glaser (best known for the I Heart NY campaign) has created a series of 17 posters for the Festival featuring violins and cows, a nod to Cooperstown's rural character. Performance Today host Fred Child has said, Not only do they do interesting concerts, they have great posters.
