Illinois Doug, Slide McBride and Dale Jones
Illinois Doug, Slide McBride and Dale Jones will be presenting a cross-section of American music; folk, jazz, blues, swing, even some classic country.  For the most part their repertoire is drawn from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, representing songs from Hank Williams to Fats Waller to Bing Crosby, and tin pan alley composers youve never heard of.

Illinois Doug:
Were pleased to have the opportunity to play some music and raise some funds for Artichoke and their community programs.  Artichoke is such a great place to come to to listen and perform without dishes clanking and TVs going in the background. People actually listen. The open mic nights and singer/songwriter nights are important in providing opportunities for fresh talent to hone their skills and build confidence.  Artichoke has been an important part of the Portland music scene over the years. It deserves our support to enable it to live on.

"Illinois" Doug Tracy is a musician, folklorist, and troubadour. Hes part of a long tradition of entertainers who share encyclopedic collections of American songs with their audiences.
Doug Tracy grew up on a farm in Mattoon, Illinois, where he first performed music. His parents both were musicians and entertainers, his father playing jazz saxophone in Chicago speak-easys and his mother singing at social events, minstrel shows and musicals.  These diverse musical influences allowed Illinois Doug to gain exposure to hundreds of long-forgotten American songs, many of which remain in his repertoire today.
During the 1960s, Doug was an active member of the blossoming folk music scene that emerged in and around Phoenix, Arizona. Eventually, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lives today. From 1991 - 2015 his group, the Two Hills Trio, showcased a deep survey of jazz, folk, blues, bluegrass, western, and traditional country music at venues throughout the area.  His mother, brother and he performed for several years as Grandma Viv and Her All Boy Band.
Slide McBride and he have performed as part of 7 Friday Night Coffee House shows.  He rarely misses a Thursday night Acoustic Village open mic.  He also hosted Acoustic Village for a year.  Illinois Doug has been an Artichoke regular for, lets just say, many years.

Dennis Slide Mc Bride
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, I got my first guitar while in high school, and taught myself how to play so I could play folk music with my banjo-playing buddy.  We added a washtub bass, and the "New River Ramblers" were born, playing folk music at school gigs.   Folk music gave way to R&R, and in college I played electric bass in a R&R band.
While in the Air Force I was stationed at Whiteman AFB in rural Missouri, where I played electric guitar with a country band, and also attended my first bluegrass festival where I heard Bill Monroe.
After the military I decided to buy a Dobro and give it a shot.   I was inspired to learn Dobro by seeing the late Uncle Josh Graves with the Flatt & Scruggs band on TV.    Mike Auldridge had just come out with his first Dobro album - so Mike and his album became my teacher.  No instructional material in those days.  I've mainly played Dobro since then.
Moving to Dallas, Texas in 1975, I hooked up with the "Salt Creek Express", playing Dobro at area bluegrass festivals and on their first album.  By the early 80s I was playing piano at the Schooners blues jams and became a regular at Charli Alexander's Sunday Jam.  I've also done some studio work and taught Dobro workshops sponsored by the Garland Square Pickers and at Gerald Jones' Acoustic Music Camp.
Im retired, and now teach private students from home and on the internet.  Since moving to Portland a few years ago Ive joined some great local musicians and vocalists playing blues, bluegrass, folk, jazz, and western swing.

Dale Jones
Life long song-writer, listener, chord wrangler, class clown, and Portland music enthusiast. A chaser of poetry, wonder, spectacle, and a witless witness of the absurd. Ive reached the conclusion that one plus one adds up to so much more than two when you add a bass. Lets play . . .
