Catalyst Kitchens Social Enterprise Immersion Workshop
Join us in Seattle for an up-close learning experience of food service job training programs that manage businesses (social enterprise). This workshop is held at our parent organization, FareStart, which has graduated over 2,900 adult and youth trainees since its inauguration in 1992.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn from key FareStart leadership on finance, development and fundraising, business operations, and student services to gain best practices on operating culinary training within a food service social enterprise. There will be tours of our 12 social enterprises and headquarters, workshop presentations, and Q&A sessions with FareStart leadership.
This workshop is a great training opportunity for board members, directors, and early stage non-profits interested in the inner workings of a successful food service social enterprise model.
WORKSHOP SESSION TOPICS INCLUDE:
Presentations and question & answer sessions from the following departments:
- Business operations: FareStart's 12 enterprises include contract meals, catering, cafes, and restaurants. We will explore how these operations provide a diverse training experience for FareStart's trainees.
- Student Services: Discussion will focus on FareStart's various training programs and critical wraparound support provided to trainees.
- Development: This session will focus on FareStart's Development department with discussing on the role of development in a social enterprise and explore FareStart's diverse funding model. -Finance: A detailed focus on FareStart's Finance department will explore financial planning, double bottom line accounting, and a deeper dive into funding models.
- Staffing: Explore the connection between business operations and student services through the FS staffing model.
- Apprenticeship: Learn about FareStart's newest Apprenticeship Program in partnership with Amazon. The new food service Apprenticeship Program launched in July of 2017 with a focus on helping entry-level food service workers obtain advanced skills to earn living wage jobs. The Apprenticeship program is housed in Amazon's newest building, Troy Block, where FareStart operates 3 fast-casual restaurants, a café, and a restaurant.
- Tour of FareStart's Adult Training Program and Apprenticeship Program.
This event will take place at FareStart's headquarters, 700 Virginia St., Seattle, WA.
Thursday, 4/12 7:45am-3:30pm Thursday evening: Optional "Guest Chef Night" at 6pm Friday, 4/13 7:45am-2:00pm
Guest Chef Night is a weekly dinner from well-known Chefs within the Seattle community. It is a three course meal prepared by students in the FareStart program and includes a student graduation ceremony at 7pm. For more details, visit FareStart's site: https://www.farestart.org/guest-chef-night

Participants are expected to pay for their own travel and lodging.
Lunch is provided during both workshop dates and an optional Guest Chef Night dinner on Thursday night at 6pm.
