ALDancers 15 years - OREGON BIRD SKETCHES
Oregon Bird Sketches began with ALD Resident Composer / Technical Director, Jackie Gabel's solo piano composition, 'Sturnella neglecta' (Western Meadowlark, Oregon State Bird), commissioned by Portland Piano International (PPI) in 2015 and premiered by Sara Daneshpour on PPI's Rising Stars Series (2016).

Upon first hearing the score, ALD Artistic Director, Agnieszka Laska, requested two accompanying sketches, to extend the suite to 15-min. This she proposed choreographing to the Oregon Arts Commission, earning her a 2017 Joan Shipley Award fellowship.

Gabel has added 'Oreortyx pictus' (Mountain Quail) and 'Zenaida macroura' (Mourning Dove). His treatment of their songs is inspired by Olivier Messiaen's 'Petites esquisses d'oiseaux' (Little sketches of birds - 1985). This premiere features video by Takafumi Uehara, behind dancers and solo pianist on stage - includes moving interaction.

In Oregon and elsewhere, a wave of "environmental" performing art is emerging. Our contribution, inspired by Oregon bird song, celebrates in fine performing art the natural beauty of Oregon's rich bird life - nothing really new, birds have sparked the imagination of musicians, probably longer than dancers have envisioned themselves taking flight.

What to expect: new choreography to choral works performed by Resonance Ensemble conducted by Brandon Brack: Henryk Górecki's 'Szeroka Woda' (Broad Waters, 1979), Jack Gabel's 'Farewell to Wang Wei' (2009) and his 'Remember Me' (1993).

Title work is new choreography to solo piano music, performed by Stephen Lewis: 3 pieces (premiere of complete set), 'Oregon Bird Sketches'  by Jack Gabel, as well as Witold Lutoslawski's set of 5 "Bucolics" (1952).

ALD'S 15th Anniversary, deserves at least one of ALD's first works, 'Songs of Eva' (premiered 2003), to cabaret songs of Zygmunt Konieczny, written for legendary Polish singer, Ewa Demarczyk (mid 1960s). Long-time ALD collaborators Nancy Wood and Paul Safar will perform these songs.

May sound like a lot, but totals about an hour, plus 20 min. intermission.
