Soul Food Junkies Screening and Conversation with Bryant Terry

Collard Greens. Mac and Cheese. Peas and Rice. Fried Chicken. For many Americans, these foods bring up memories of Sunday dinner, family reunions and quality time in kitchen. These foods have also been at the center of national debate around the obesity and diet-related illness.
Join us at 18 Reasons for a community screening and engaging discussion of the new documentary, Soul Food Junkies. Directed by Byron Hurt, Soul Food Junkies explores the history and social significance of soul food to black cultural identity and its effect on African American health, good and bad. In the film, soul food is also used as the lens to investigate the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement that has been born in its wake.
Following the screening, Shakirah Simley will lead a conversation with author, chef and food justice activist, Bryant Terry. The screening will also feature a cash bar and free nibbles from Terry's best-selling cookbook, 'Vegan Soul Kitchen'.
