Cor Unum Ensemble presents Pergolesi: Stabat Mater
Founded in 2016, Cor Unum Ensemble enters its second season of presenting concerts of vocal and instrumental music. Highlights of last season include J.S. Bach's St. John Passion with guest director UK violinist Adrian Butterfield and touring to Hamilton to perform in the Hammer Baroque concert series.
We strive to create performance opportunities for young artists passionate about early music and foster their growth as individual artists. Our process is intentionally collaborative, valuing the collective experience our artists possess. We learn from each other as we prepare the music together, culminating in at least two performances of the same program, allowing us to take performance risks a single performance may not render.
The dedication, scholarship, and spirited energy of our collaboration is a mere reflection of the mentorship and encouragement of the rich historical performance community in Toronto.
Pergolesi's Stabat Mater The Stabat Mater is a latin text that recounts the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, during his crucifixion. This particular setting of the text is sung by a soprano and mezzo-soprano, either in a solo, or duet, accompanied by a string ensemble and organ. Our interpretation will be led without a conductor, include winds in the orchestra, and feature many different voices as soloists.
The program will also include a guest vocal soloist, singing a cantata with the ensemble, players joining the ensemble for a tutti orchestral piece, and more surprises!
