TWAS ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS: A Christmas Concert
Acts as varied as a bluegrass duo and a Celtic harpist will celebrate the holidays in "Twas On A Night Like This: A Christmas Concert" on Saturday, December 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Phippsburg Congregational Church.  The program of traditional and original songs will be performed by bluegrass duo April & Bill Jubett, Celtic harpist Danielle Paus, and award-winning singer-songwriters Lisa Redfern and Jud Caswell.

April and Bill Jubett play and sing with the first generation of bluegrass music in mind.  Having met at a bluegrass festival in 2006, April and Bill have been singing high lonesome harmonies together ever since.  Before moving to Maine two years ago, they lived in New Hampshire and played with Hot Mustard, a Vermont-based bluegrass band.  They have played key New England bluegrass festivals like Boston Bluegrass Union's Joe Val Festival, Strawberry Park, Jenny Brook, Ossipee Valley, Pemi Valley, and Kentucky's Vine Grove Bluegrass Festival.

Danielle Paus is a classically trained harpist who is a member of the applied music faculty at Colby College.  The daughter of a classical harpist, she started playing the harp from an early age.  Danielle has toured both as a solo artist and with the Celtic flute and harp duo Naia.  She has been heard on National Public Radios "Thistle and Shamrock," and in 2013 released her album "Siren Song," which features modern arrangements of traditional Celtic music.  She plays a 34-string Celtic harp made in Scotland of American cherry wood and Bavarian spruce.

Lisa Redfern is an award-winning singer-songwriter based in Maine.
With 11 solo recordings to her credit, she is a singer who blends her roots in folk, bluegrass, country, gospel, blues, jazz and swing to create something unmistakably her own.  She has also added her clear, beautiful voice to dozens of other artists projects and song compilations and has opened for many notables, including Pete Seeger, Dave Mallett, The Roches, Cindy Kallet, and Livingston Taylor.  Enthusing that he had not heard a voice like hers in 30 years, Taylor said that she sounds like "one of the original women of folk."   Folk Roots magazine says that "Redfern applies the spiritual, ethereal feeling found in early mountain music it's just a reminder of what real music is capable of when it's set free."   Lisa has played venues like One Longfellow Square, Blue, Portland House of Music, Frontier, and Slates.

Maine-based Jud Caswell has played folk festivals from Texas to Oregon and won some of the best songwriting contests in the country.  He has appeared at iconic venues like Nashville's Bluebird and Cambridge's Club Passim and at celebrated festivals across the country.  While his music is often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox, his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock.  Wilcox offers his own praise, acclaiming Caswell as "much more than a great singer and guitar player, Jud's songs take you into the storyteller's world with clear images and characters that come to life for the listener."
Maine Today is even more emphatic: "Jud Caswell is an enormously talented lyricist, composer, performer, and producer. It's only a matter of time before he's discovered by the rest of the world; you should discover him now."

Join us for a warm evening of songs, stories, and home-cooked refreshments at intermission.  The show will be performed in the historic 1802 Phippsburg Congregational Church.
