Melissa Garay

Melissa Garay is an exciting, young songstress from the Monterey Bay area. There are few singers that can match her 5-octave vocal range. She is a captivating, dynamic singer with the ability and vocal technique to master a cornucopia of musical styles.

Melissa discovered her remarkable love for song while growing up singing in school and church choirs. A graduate of the Cabrillo College Jazz program, Melissa is completing her studies at San Jose State University Jazz Studies program.

Melissa is currently the lead vocalist of both the San Jose State Jazz Ensemble and the San Jose State Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. The San Jose State Jazz ensemble students perform a traditional and contemporary repertoire from an array of composers spanning over 50 years of Jazz history and the Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble performs music from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the African Diaspora under the direction of Professor Jeff Lewis. The Afro- Latin Ensemble performs two full concerts per semester. Students are selected for this ensemble by audition only.

In recognition of her senior recital, Melissa will be preforming here at the Kuumwba with special guests. She is looking forward to earning her continuing her musical education and attending the Doctorate program in Jazz Studies at San Jose State University
