Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents the concert Opera Roles.
The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra (BSO) continues its 79th season, Role Play, with the concert Opera Roles on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Dr. Beverly Everett conducts.
Recently returned from Germany, award-winning tenor J. Warren Mitchell is a rising star in the opera world. He joins the BSO for a program of well-known opera arias and beautiful German art songs. Also on the program is LArlésienne Suite No. 2 by Georges Bizet.
J. Warren Mitchell, a native of Montgomery AL, is a lyric tenor now venturing into the world of international opera. As a competitor in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, he received the Trudy Oliphant Sundgren Young Singer Encouragement Award in 2011, and in 2012 he placed second in the Midwest regional finals. In January of 2013, J. Warren was chosen to participate in a workshop at Carnegie Hall where he was one of four singers to perform in a public master class with legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. That spring, he was chosen as a recipient of the Agnes Varis Career Encouragement Grant and was a nominee for the Sara Tucker Award. J. Warren attended the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA as a voice fellow and was the recipient of the Irene Cummings Hostetler and Theodore Hostetler Full Scholarship in Voice. He was one of fifteen tenors selected to participate in a three-week program of study in New York with renowned tenor Neil Shicoff and conductors Stephen Lord and Eugene Kohn. In 2015, out of 450 singers worldwide, J. Warren was selected as winner of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg International Opera Competition in Rheinsberg, Germany. His prize was a European debut as Alfredo in Verdis La Traviata. Also that year, J. Warren was invited to the Bellevue Palace in Berlin to perform for the German President in celebration of the Kammeropers 25th anniversary season. He returned to his alma mater, Auburn University, as a distinguished alumnus and made his recital debut. In 2016, J. Warren returned to Germany as a two-time winner of the Kammeropers International Opera Competition and sang the role of Cavaradossi in Puccinis opera, Tosca. He recently recorded his first CD, The Aria Album.
All seats general admission. Doors open for seating at 2:30 pm. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota, through a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
