The Ensemble presents Lent in Italy
Catherine van der Salm, Laura Beckel Thoreson and string ensemble in a Lenten tour de force of Pergolesis Stabat Mater and Ferrandinis Il pianto di Maria.
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi wrote his most famous work, Stabat Mater, in the final months of his life in 1736. Although a sacred work, the music is written in a light, operatic style. Much revered after Pergolesis death, it was adapted and modified by many composers, including J.S. Bach. Stabat Mater will be presented here in its original form.
Giovanni Battista Ferrandini is not a household name, but was a child prodigy who was visited by a much more famous child prodigy, W.A. Mozart, late in life. Il pianto di Maria, for mezzo-soprano and strings, was long attributed to G.F. Handel, but has recently been attributed to Ferrandini. Composed of dramatic recitatives and poignant arias in alternation, Il pianto di Maria is reminiscent of the Stabat Mater, portraying Mary as she cries in pain and accuses heaven of having abandoned her son.
