HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Directed by David France
2012, USA, 120 minutes, documentary, unrated

COMMUNITY PARTNER: VCS

Post-film discussion: Participants include Sharonann Lynch, an HIV/AIDS policy adviser to Doctors Without Borders, and Robert Maher, Executive Director/CEO, TOUCH (Together Our Unity Can Heal).

Rage, fear, determination and triumph crackle throughout this inspiring documentary, which traces the role of the AIDS activist organization ACT-UP, in pushing sluggish government agencies and drug companies in the 1980s to "think different" as the AIDS epidemic spread like wildfire in the gay population. Their efforts accelerated the development of life-saving drugs and were a breakthrough for the notion that patients and advocates canand shouldsit at the table when decisions impacting millions of lives are made.

New York Film Critics Circle: Best First Film

One of the top 5 documentaries of 2012  A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"The true value of the film is universal: These kids study the knotty viral science, pressure doctors into taking daring, inventive steps and make their cause a global emblem. It forces you to wonder why we can't have two 'greatest generations.' Every fighter, whatever the cause, is expected to attend."  Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
