MEMPHIS BLACK ARTS ALLIANCE'S JAZZ-A-F!RE - AUGUST 2017
MBAA CELEBRATE 35th ANNIVERSARY WITH
Legendary Crowd Favorite Kurl McKinney!
The Memphis Black Arts Alliance is delighted to present some of the BEST artist in the Greater Memphis area and beyond at Jazz-A-F!RE, held Every Last Sunday of the month from 4-7pm at the Beautiful Brinson's Restaurant & Lounge, located at 341 Madison Avenue, Downtown Memphis. This month, as we continue our year-long 35th Anniversary Celebration, we welcome and honor the Astounding Kurl McKinney!
Mr. McKinneys musical career began in 1957 with the Phillip Reynolds band in Jackson, Tennessee. After graduation from Lane College with a degree in music, he came to Memphis, where he recorded an album at Sam Phillips Studio (later Sun Studio) and played in bands with soul music legends Bo Legs... Miller and Ben Branch. Mr. McKinney later managed and performed with the Prince Gabe Band, and also played with Roy Strong and the Dynamics.
Kurl McKinney helped organize The Memphians, known as Memphis best cover band for 12 years. The Memphians played behind several great artists including Syl Johnson, and went on to record at HiRecords. Mr. McKinney also managed and played keyboard for The Alfred Rudd Soft Fire Band for several years, and helped develop a young Preston Shannon to greatness. Kurl McKinney is now one of the main attractions on a roster of great musicians that play weekly at the Peabody Hotel. Mr. McKinneys bluesy style and his ability to tell jokes always makes him a crowd favorite.
Memphis Black Arts Alliances Jazz-A-F!RE is hosted by the Spectacular Cequita Monique along with the cool sounds of Prime Cut Trio, and DJ cbeyohn as they usher us into the land of Smooth Jazz! Our monthly featured guest artists croon us further up the road and then we end the evening by inviting you, our audience, to join the band on stage in our BYOI (Bring Your Own Instrument) full-out jam session! There is nothing in the city like Jazz-A-F!RE!
