Where's Your Walden? Following Thoreau's Example of Finding a Local Refuge in Nature

Join us Wednesday, September 20 for dinner with NY Times best-selling author Michael Tougias.

Tougias is the author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War), and co-author with Eric Schultz of King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict. This war was fought between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76, with many battle sites in Central Massachusetts. The presentation covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history.

The second part of the presentation is titled after Tougias' book Quabbin: A History and Explorers Guide. This slide program features the demise of the lost towns flooded to create the Quabbin, the construction of the massive reservoir, and how the Quabbin works today. In addition Tougias will take the audience on a natural history tour of the Quabbin and surrounding area with suggestions for day trips and stops at special hidden spots.

When Quabbin was constructed in the late 1920s and 1930s, four towns drowned, 2,500 residents displaced, and 7,500 graves were moved. Today Quabbin Reservoir provides water for Boston and 45 other communities, serving over 2.5 million people. Quabbin and the surrounding forest is the largest tract of open space in southern New England, home to nesting loons and bald eagles, coyotes, porcupines, and moose.

Doors open at 6:00pm, with cash bar and book signing. Dinner at 7:15 followed by slide presentations by Tougias.
