Opacum Land Trust Fall Dinner with Dr. Robert M. Thorson; Following Thoreau's Example of Finding a Local Refuge in Nature
Join us Wednesday, September 19th for dinner with Dr. Robert M. Thorson, a professor at the University of Connecticut, an award-winning author, scientist, and journalist, and an expert guide on Thoreau's Concord. Thorson's program will connect his lifetime of scholarship in the subjects of geology, Henry Thoreau and New England's landscape to the special character of this region. Many of us have a personal place in Nature where we find refuge. Often, its an ordinary place where the landscape of rock, water, sky, and woods somehow touches us. We are fortunate to be surrounded by natural beauty in this area of central Massachusetts - where we can still find a place to seek out, be still and unwind.
Thorson's newest book, The Guide to Walden Pond, published in March of this year, is the first of its kind and writing it helped Professor Thorson understand how Thoreau created his "sense of place.
We of course know of Walden Pond in Concord, an average place at the time, where Henry David Thoreau found refuge for two years, two months, and two days. The result of his retreat was Walden, the literary fountainhead of Americas environmental consciousness. During his talk, Thorson hopes to share what I learned of Thoreau's place and what he did there.
GoodReads says of it, Using this guide, both armchair readers and trail-walkers alike can amble around the ponds shoreline, pausing at fifteen special places to learn about people, historic events, and the natural world. Thoreau will be a constant companion via quotes from Walden.
Join us to hear Dr. Thorson connect his scholarship in the subjects of Thoreau, geology, and New England's landscape to the special character of our region.
