Hava Nagila (The Movie)
Opening Night Film and Reception sponsored by the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah
********************************************************************************************* Thanks to all who bought tickets to the opening night of the 2013 Charlotte Jewish Film Festival. "Hava Nagila, The Movie" is completely sold out! *********************************************************************************************
It is to music what the bagel is to food - a Jewish staple that has transcended its origins and become a worldwide hit. Follow the infectious party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the cul-de-sacs of America in this hilarious and surprisingly deep film. Featuring interviews with Larry David, Leonard Nimoy, Glen Campbell, Harry Belafonte, Connie Francis and more, Hava Nagila (The Movie) takes viewers from the Ukraine to the Catskills to Hollywood (and even Bollywood) using the song as a springboard to explore Jewish identity and to spotlight the cross-cultural connections that can only be achieved through music.
Special appearance by the film's director, Roberta Grossman. Screening followed by professionally catered dessert reception and musical entertainment by Bill Averbach and the Carolina Klezmer Project!
Directed by Roberta Grossman
Documentary Feature/USA/English/73 minutes/2012
"When you find a song that says, 'Let us rejoice', there is no better song to leave an evening with. Hava Nagila tells us who we should be and what we, in a fundamental sense, aspire to be - peoples of love and joy and peace." - Harry Belafonte
"Judging by its keen production, sharp wit, and disarming cultural inquiry, [the film] is likely to further Grossman's reputation as a leader in her field." - Tikkun.org
"Brilliant! A celebration of Jewish community." - Jweekly
"Hava Nagila is like a snowflake rolling along through Jewish history, picking up more and more layers and meaning as it goes." - The Jewish Daily Forward
"Glorious. Plan to walk out humming or maybe singing out loud!" - San Jose Mercury News
