Cuba Fe is proud to host an evening celebrating the work of artist Paul Enso Hillman.
Cuban food will be available by R.S.V.P. for $15 per plate.

Faces reflect our life experiences. I seek to make portraits not of beautiful people but rather of interesting characters who lead authentic, animated lives.

When drawing portraits, I first call up the subject's photograph on my computer screen for reference. I then take pen in hand and begin a line drawing of the face before me, always to the rhythm of music, usually bossa nova or jazz. I call this improvisational drawing a "skeleton" of the illustration to come. Using traditional drawing tools-pen and ink, magic markers, pastels, and watercolors-I apply layers of color to the paper, striking a beat similar to that of a percussionist playing a drum. I never try to control these strokes; they are executed as if riding a spirited horse and letting it have its head. Areas of complexity and simplicity, positive and negative space start appearing naturally as the illustration begins coming together. When completed, each image although frozen in time, expresses the energy resonating within it; and if we listen hard we can hear the music.
Paul Hillman's interest in illustration began in 1963 while studying anatomical drawing at The Art Students League in New York City. In 1968, he entered the workforce at CBS as a graphic designer for Walter Cronkite Evening News, emerging forty years later as art director on The View with Barbara Walters. At first, a mentor told him not to stay in TV too long since it would destroy his creativity, so every day after finishing his "day of air" graphics work he woudl do an illustration. Problem solved.

Petra was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. she began playing guitar when she was 12 years old. In 1980 she and her family moved to Canada where she studied with Czech guitarist Antonin Bartos. At the age of 17, she spent a year in Brazil which greatly influenced her musical style. After another important year in the west of Canada, she returned to Montreal and obtained a degree in music interpretation from McGill University, and a Masters Degree at Universite de Montreal. Since then, she continues to teach and perform in the Santa Fe area, realizing more and more the importance and power of music in our lives.
