NWAAFF 2006: CLOSING NIGHT GALA: SORCERESS OF THE NEW PIANO
CLOSING NIGHT GALA: SORCERESS OF THE NEW PIANO: THE ARTISTRY OF MARGARET LENG TAN USA/Singapore/Hong Kong, 2005, 68 minutes Sponsored in part by Washington Composers Forum and Cornish College of the Arts
A celebration of the fascinating career of Margaret Leng Tan, hailed by The New Yorker as the "diva of avant-garde pianism." The world's first professional toy pianist, Tan has risen to the highest ranks of performers interpreting the ground-breaking works of master composers Henry Cowell, George Crumb, and John Cage in addition to works by newer generations of composers like Philip Glass and Tan Dun.
Special guest Margaret Leng Tan will perform a number of works before the screening including John Cage's seminal Bacchanale. She will also participate in a Q&A afterwards.
"[O]ne of the best films ever made about a musician...not only an exciting work of art in itself, but one of the very few films that manage to communicate some real and substantial information about the art of music." -- Washington Post
