The Lyrical Strings Duo at Trinity Chapel
Wednesday Dec. 5th, 7 pm. Trinity Chapel, 2320 Dana Street, Berkeley, CA Reception to follow at the Musical Offering
The Lyrical Strings Duo (Lucia Conrad on violin and Stephen Osserman on classical guitar) make their California debut and celebrate the release of their album "Evening Songs" with a concert in Berkeley's lovely Trinity Chapel
The program will range from the dark and mysterious romantic era works of Chopin and Mendelssohn, to folk-inspired dances and songs of Kreisler, Ponce, and Gottschalk. It will include selections from the album as well as more recent arrangements.
About the Duo Lucia was born and raised in Czech Republic and is a graduate of the Prague Conservatory. She has appeared in both the United States and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. Now based in Portland, she is the Concertmaster of the Willamette Falls Symphony, Assistant Concertmaster of the Salem Chamber Orchestra and the first violinist in many other regional orchestras and chamber groups.
A native of Berkeley, CA Stephen has always been interested in pursuing new avenues with old music on the classical guitar. While a student at the Yale School of Music, he collaborated with a wide array of artists, combining traditional guitar repertoire with dance, poetry, theater and more. Recently he has focused on arranging Romantic Era works for the Violin and Guitar, many of which the duo recorded on their CD "Evening Songs" and plans to publish in 2013.
Lucia and Stephen met through in 2009 through Classical Revolution PDX, a network of musicians with a shared desire to make classical music a part of people's daily lives and chamber music a vibrant part of Portland's artistic community. In 2010 they formed the Lyrical Strings Duo, and they've been taking their music to the churches, parks, halls, and living rooms of the Pacific Northwest ever since.
Praise "I was not expecting a duo of violin and guitar to work as amazingly well as it did... Groups like Lyrical Strings Duo... are doing more than breathing new life into composers; they are breathing new life into the artists and audiences." -PFM Reports (http://www.pfmreports.com/2012/08/27/secret-society-and-a-duo-that-met-in-a-revolution/)
"You were terrific! Such wonderful transcriptions and choice of repertoire. The duo you have put together works superbly." -Pat Zagelow, Director, Friends of Chamber Music (http://focm.org/concerts-events/2012-13-dinner-with-friends/a-step-up/2389/)
"To my mind the playing on this album ["Evening Songs"] is as good as it gets - articulate, well-phrased, passionate and soulful. We hear the dynamic and explosive contrasted with tender moments of lyricism." -Philip Rosheger, master guitarist and composer
