About the Artists:

Wajdi Ayoub is a well-established Syrian vocalist specializing in the classical repertoire. He focuses on the Egyptian dawr and Andalucian muwashahat, genres that are hallmarks of the Aleppian tradition. Ayoub was born in Aleppo, Syria, and started to sing and play the 'oud at an early age. He was a student of Abdel-Qader Hajjar and Kamel Bassal (both students of sheikh Omar Al-Batsh, a prolific composer of Muwashahat) and of Safwan Al-Abed. Ayoub performed many concerts at the Citadel of Aleppo, as a solo artist and as part of Sabah Fakhris ensemble. Since he relocated to the United States two years ago, Ayoub has been a regular performer and voice teacher.

Takht Al-Nagham is a New York-based ensemble. It features the sound of an Arab takht (Arab chamber group) and is committed to performing the classical Arab repertoire with traditional and acoustic instruments. Nagham means melody or tune in Arabic, but is also used as a synonym for the Arab Maqam system which is the foundation of the ensembles repertoire.

Samer Ali is an Arabic music violinist. A native of Syria, he resides in New York City and is the founder of Takht Al-Nagham. He currently performs with the National Arab Orchestra. Samer began studying western classical violin at the age of eight and later pursued intensive conservatory studies with Ali Mukhtar Babayev. He co-founded the Awj Arab music ensemble in Damascus, Syria in 2007, and performed with the Ugarit Ensemble. Samer studied the Arabic violin and classical music traditions with Ali Farran and Ziad Ajjan (both are students of composer and scholar Mahmoud Ajjan), Simon Shaheen, and Muhammad Qadri Dalal. Samer has worked with musicians in the US and Syria, including Moncef Genoud, Khaleel Haj Hussein, Bassam Saba, and Michel Merhej Baklouk. Samer received his M.D. from Tishreen University, and is currently a resident physician at Mount Sinai hospital.
