On Thursday May 18, 2017, Redshift Music Society presents Transfigured Light, a concert of vocal chamber music of the past and present featuring the Arkora collective in their Vancouver debut. Taking place in the serene and modern beauty of Mountain View Cemeterys Celebration Hall, the concert explores themes of death, rebirth, light, and darkness through song cycles, motets, and other vocal chamber works, including three commissioned world premieres.

The first part of Transfigured Light pairs commissions by living composers with some of the most adventuresome motets of the Renaissance era, including movements from the Prophetiae Sibyllarum by Orlando di Lasso, Caligaverunt oculi mei by Tomás Luis de Victoria, and the rarely performed, microtonal Musica prisca caput by Nicola Vicentino. In return, Vancouver composers Dorothy Chang and Benton Roark and Brooklyn composer Brendon Randall-Myers offer new works written for voices and instrumental ensemble, encompassing hand-built instruments such as the Lumiphone, Redshifts own 31-tone equal temperament glass marimba.

The second half of the evening culminates with a performance of death speaks, David Langs masterful 25-minute meditation on the transient nature of existence for piano, violin, electric guitar, and soprano, featuring Kathleen Allan in the soloist role.
