Jazz Brunch - Afternoon Concert - Jazz Dinner-  To Raise Funds for New Transmitter

Radio station WPKN, 89.5 FM Bridgeport, announces a full day of jazz, live and recorded, Sunday, April 2, to raise money to replace its aging transmitter. The tube-based transmitter has been in continuous operation 24/7 for over 40 years at the 10,000-watt FM non-profit, listener-supported radio station. Over half the $75,000 needed to install a new transmitter has been raised since January of this year, and all proceeds of the jazz event will go towards this project.

JAZZ ON A SUNDAY will be broadcast live on WPKN-89.5 FM and stream live on wpkn.org on Sunday April 2, from 10AM-10 PM. Sets of live jazz will originate at 323 Restaurant, 323 Main Street in Westport. Between sets, recorded jazz and commentary from the WPKN studios will round out the broadcast.

The day begins with a Brazilian Jazz Brunch from 11-1:30, featuring the music of the trio "Sambeleza.  Joe Carter, Jeff Fuller, and Laura Volpintesta perform a variety of sophisticated, swinging Brazilian Sambas and Bossa Novas with a modern jazz twist. Tickets are $50 and the hours are 11am to 2:00pm. (Each ticket includes food, one drink, tax and tip)

The afternoon will feature a variety of jazz musicians hosted by Rick Petrone, WPKN jazz DJ and bassist who played with Buddy Rich, Marian McPartland, and Maynard Ferguson, and was associated with the now-defunct local radio station WJZZ , once home to all-jazz radio.  The casual, 'drop-in' event will feature a number of special guests during the set from 2pm to 5:30pm.  Tickets are limited and are $20.

The finale is a special, intimate Jazz dinner with music curated by Greg Wall, the Jazz Rabbi, internationally-known saxophone player, and his group Portal.  They have gathered a roster of well-known jazz musicians from the tristate area to join him onstage for a full evening of jazz.  Some of the guest artists scheduled to appear throughout the day include WPKNs Rick Petrone, Nicole Pasternak, David Chevan, Dave Childs, Matt Moadel, Chris Coogan, David Morgan, Joe Corsello, Giacomo Gates and other special guests.  Tickets are $100 for the dinner jazz event that runs from 7pm t0 10pm.  (Each ticket includes food, one drink, tax and tip)

Seating is very limited for all three events. Early reservations are recommended. Tickets may be purchased by going to wpkn.org or to Brown Paper Tickets.

*The day will also celebrate the newly formed Jazz Society of Fairfield County (JazzFC), a non-profit that promotes jazz, and owns an historic 1937 Steinway piano that came from the Village Gate- now used for performances at 323 Restaurant every Thursday night.  Such luminaries as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, and Earl Hines have played the piano..
