Gilbert Castellanos & Arlene Damasco Present: ART MEETS JAZZ, a new series featuring unique salutes to some of the greatest legends of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and more! Southern California artists who support and capture the vibrant San Diego jazz scene utilizing various mediums - photography, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, sketch, etc. - will showcase their original work each night. This series will merge music and art to highlight multiple-perspectives, and the talented musicians, that create the heartbeat of jazz in Americas Finest City.

THE BAND:

GILBERT CASTELLANOS (Band Leader/Trumpet)
Leading the band is none other than virtuoso trumpeter and Downbeat Magazine American Master Gilbert Castellanos. Artistic Director of the San Diego Symphony's "Jazz at The Jacobs," Castellanos knows what it takes to make a jazz series a success. He has been a driving force in the San Diego jazz scene for over fifteen years. Gilbert is host to the city's longest running weekly jazz jam, is a renowned music educator and champion of the next generation of jazz, curating a weekly Young Lions Series at Panama 66/San Diego Museum of Art. He also serves as Artistic Director for the International Academy of Jazz and continues to find new avenues to keep jazz alive and well!

LORRAINE CASTELLANOS (Vocalist)
Lorraine Castellanos has an intense passion for music, evident in her perceptive phrasing and tone, both as an instrumentalist and vocalist. With a weighty voice and sensitive execution on the Classical Guitar, Castellanos is gaining a reputation as a dynamic musical presence right here in her hometown. Sarah Vaughn is one of the great female jazz song stylists who have inspired her to sing selections from the great American Songbook. Castellanos enjoys working as a soloist, as well as a leader and has performed with Mundell Lowe, Charlie Chavez, Justo Almario, Irving Flores, Melissa Morgan, Bob Boss and Gilbert Castellanos, just to name a few. She has led the Lorraine Castellanos Sextet highlighting popular jazz standards, and co-leads the innovative chamber ensemble Besos de Coco who recently opened the San Diego Symphonys Jazz at The Jacobs series Women In Jazz show at Copley Symphony Hall.

GRAHAM DECHTER (Guitar)
An accomplished guitarist, composer and arranger, Los Angeles native Graham Dechter plays with swinging authority and has toured worldwide with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra for over a decade. A formidable soloist and consummate accompanist, Dechter plays with a deep reverence for the jazz guitar tradition apparent whether ballad, bossa, bebop or blues. A partial list of his credits include: the La La Land movie soundtrack, Michael Bublés best-selling Christmas album, guitarist for Brazilian jazz pianist and vocal sensation, Eliane Elias, and regular performances with drummer Jeff Hamilton and Hammond B-3 organist Akiko Tsuruga. He has also worked with saxophonists Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath,Frank Wess, Charles McPherson and James Moody; guitarists John Pizzarelli, Bucky Pizzarelli, Mundell Lowe and Russell Malone; organists Larry Goldings and Atsuko Hashimoto; singers Jon Hendricks, Nancy Wilson and Kurt Elling; violinist Regina Carter; pianists Billy Taylor, Freddie Cole, Benny Green and Bill Charlap; clarinetist Paquito D Rivera; trombonists Curtis Fuller and Wycliffe Gordon; and trumpeters Terell Stafford, Clark Terry, Snooky Young and Wynton Marsalis.

RYAN SHAW (Drums)
Ryan Shaws musical pursuits began at age five on piano, followed by percussion at eight. He got his first drum set at 10. Over the years, he played regularly at church while participating in his school's band, marching band, and jazz band. Later, he moved from Oregon to San Diego with his family and was selected as the drummer for the Southern California School Band Orchestra Association Honor Jazz Band in 2013. He currently studies at the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music. In addition to Jazz, Ryan frequently performs with various Pop and Indie groups. He arranges and writes for jazz trios, combos, and big bands. Ryan has performed with: Seth MacFarlane, Bill Holman, Gilbert Castellanos, Rob Lockhart, Joshua White, Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford, Melissa Morgan, Graham Dechter, Bob Sheppard, Dan Higgins, Gerald Clayton, Chuck Berghofer, Christian Jacob, Bob McChesney, Dave Damiani and more. He has performed at many top Southern California Jazz clubs including the Blue Whale, Catalina, Vitellos, Vibrato, and Spaghettini.

ALEX FRANK (Upright Bass)
Alex Frank is a first-call bassist for film (Jersey Boys, Black Nativity), television (Youre The Worst, Modern Family, Friends With Better Lives), and records (Bruce Forman, Dave Damiani). He is an in-demand accompanist for jazz singers Jane Monheit, film icon Molly Ringwald, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. (Americas Got Talent winner, 2011), Renee Olstead (TVs Still Standing, The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Spencer Day, James Tormé, Melissa Morgan and more. In 2013, Frank placed second in the International Society of Bassists biennial jazz competition. In 2014, as a member of Bruce Formans Cow Bop, he toured internationally and was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. Frank graduated from Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied bass with Peter Dominguez and jazz giant Eddie Gomez from the Bill Evans trio. He also studied with legendary bassist John Clayton and David Allen Moore of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Frank has had the pleasure of performing with music icons George Benson, Benny Golson, Roy McCurdy, Marcus Belgrave, John Pisano, and Jim Keltner; Grammy winners John Proulx, Peter Erskine, Bill Cunliffe, Mike Lang, and Bill Holman; the big bands of Holman, Johnny Mandel, Allan Chan, Ron King, Elliot Deutsch, and the Budman/Levy Orchestra; George Doerings bluegrass group, The Brombies; and with many other renowned artists including Graham Dechter, Clayton Cameron, Josh Nelson, John Daversa, Bob Reynolds, Bob Sheppard, Tamir Hendelman, Marvin "Smitty" Smitt, etc. Frank plays at a variety of venues in Los Angeles including Cliftons Cafeteria downtown, Dave Koz Lounge at Spaghettinis in Beverly Hills, and The Federal Bar in North Hollywood.

ROBERT DOVE (Tenor Sax)
According to Robert Bush, a Southern California writer and reviewer for publications including the San Diego Reader, NBC San Diego, and All About Jazz, San Diego-based Saxophonist Robert Dove is, "As a soloist, hes in a word, formidable. Dove is an alumni of UNC-Greensboros Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. In 2013, he moved to San Diego and began his professional career. Dove has performed at a multitude of venues and events spanning the United States, Canada and Europe. Well versed in all aspects of jazz, he arranges, composes, performs and educates with multiple groups throughout Southern California including: the Robert Dove Quartet (check out their debut album Paradigm Shift featuring Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins, which highlights the influences of jazz royalty with a modern approach); group co-leader of the Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra; sideman with groups including The Lorraine Castellanos Sextet, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, the San Diego Symphony's Jazz @ The Jacobs Jazz Orchestra, and many more. He has shared the stage with John Ellis, Marcus Roberts, Lee Konitz, Wessel Warmdaddy Anderson, Jason Marsalis, Donny McCaslin, Peter Bernstein, Jim Rupp, Bobby Floyd, Byron Stripling, Gene Walker, and many other prominent musicians.
