Noche Andaluza featuring Emil Altschuler, violin and Artem Belogurov, piano
'Noche Andaluza' is a beautiful and fiery program for violin and piano that explores  the music of composers such as Falla, Ravel, and Poulenc that were inspired by the
music  and  historical  events  of  Spain.  One of  these  gems  is  de  Falla's  'Siete Canciones  Populares  Españolas,'  which  draws  from  Andalusian  Flamenco,
specifically  cante  jondo.  Francis Poulenc's  'Sonata for  violin  and  piano'  was composed during 1942 and 1943 while his country was at war and its dedication is
to the memory of a victim of a then recent foreign conflict: Federico Garcia Lorca, the  poet,  who  was  slain  during  the  Spanish Civil War. Ravel's 'Pièce  en  forme  de Habanera,' is a blindingly difficult virtuoso exercise modeled after the habanera, a slow  sultry  Spanish  dance  and  of  'Tzigane,'  Ravel  wrote  to  Bartok,  "You  have inspired  me  to  write  a  short  piece  of  diabolical  difficulty,  conjuring  up  the
Hungary of my dreams. Since it will be for violin, why don't we call it "Tzigane"?"

About the Musicians:

Emil Altschuler
One of America's finest up and coming virtuoso violinists, Emil Altschuler, performs at a world class standard and possesses a commanding stage presence. He holds degrees from The Juilliard School and The Yale School of Music. Master violinist, Erick Friedman, wrote of him: "a very gifted violinist who possesses the talent and capability to become a truly outstanding violinist of his generationand sound and accuracy of intonation that are truly extraordinary."

His brilliant technique and vigorous performance energy has received ovations in venues such as Lincoln Center, San Francisco's Helen Von Ammon's Emerging Artist Series, The Aspen Music Festival, and Italy's Castello di Galeazza. As a featured soloist, he has appeared with the Aspen Young Artist's Orchestra, the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Binghamton University Chamber Orchestra. Emil performs regularly with Belgian guitarist Jérôme Mouffe in the AM Duo interpreting Spanish, Tango, and contemporary works alongside classical masterpieces. The Hardwick Gazette raves of them "coordination was spectacular, with sensitive phrasing and a depth of feeling in their touch" and The Armenian Weekly says "musicians who are also artists." Most recently, he has teamed up with Ukranian pianist Artem Belogurov.

As a recording artist he has released his debut album "Emil Altschuler - Violin," arranged with his brother Josiah Altschuler, with a gypsy jazz style guitar accompaniment. Recently, he was selected by renowned author and violin pedagogue Janice Tucker Rhoda to record 'The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner, Book 1' and 'The ABCs of Violin for the Advanced, Book 3' for publisher Carl Fischer Music. He is also a featured artist on his brother's first album 'Murder Ballads and Love Songs for Cello and Voice.' His latest project to be recorded this season includes works by Mozart, de Falla, Ravel, and Bartok. This past summer he coached at New England Conservatory's Festival Youth Orchestra.

Artem Belogurov
Artem Belogurov's lively and expressive performances delight audiences in theUS and Europe. His extensive repertoire ranges through three centuries of soloand chamber works. He has given numerous solo and chamber recitals in the USA and Europe, performing at well-known venues, such as the Harvard Music Association, Slosberg Recital Hall at Brandeis University, Pickman Concert Hall at Longy School of Music, Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory, Rice University, and the University of North Texas. He performed in the Piano Future! Festival and played the Boston premiere of Elliot Carter's Catenaires for piano. He also appeared in 2009 on the WGBH radio station live broadcast with cellist Bong-Ihn Koh. In 2008 and 2010 Artem toured Russia and Ukraine, performing solo and chamber music, was praised for his "grace, elegance, and high artistry" (Odesskie Izvestiya), and, in the summer of 2010, appeared on ART TV in Odessa, Ukraine. The same summer found him performing and giving masterclasses in Limerick, Ireland.

He has a particular interest in music of the Viennese Classical and contemporary periods. Audiences revel in his witty and stylish performance of the former; his dedication to the latter has led to his collaborating and performing with composers such as Julia Werntz, Michael Gandolfi, Matti Kovler, Elliot Carter, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Beat Furrer.

In 2007, Artem attended the Aspen Music Festival, and in 2009 the Tanglewood Music Festival, on full scholarships, where he studied with Emanuel Ax, Claude and Pamela Frank, Garrick Olssohn, and others. In 2010, he studied with Robert Levin at the Sommerakademie of the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He has participated in masterclasses with Christian Teztlaff, Alexander Lonquich, Vladimir Feltsman, James Levine, and Andras Schiff.

Artem received his early training at the Stolyarsky School of Music in Odessa, Ukraine, majoring in music theory, piano performance, and composition. In 2009, he received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston, where his primary teachers were Gabriel Chodos, Patricia Zander, and Victor Rosenbaum. He is currently a student of Peter Serkin.

His current projects include collaborations with composers Tony Schemmer and Matti Kovler, and performances with violinist Emil. He is also engaged on a number of recordings, both of solo and chamber repertoire. As well as performing on modern piano, Artem is actively pursuing his interest in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century pianos.
