Cuddle Magic is a large ensemble and songwriting collective based in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. With nary an electric guitar in sight, Cuddle Magic uses a quiet 20th century palette vibraphone, clarinet, muted trumpet, banjo, ukulele, violin, vocal counterpoint, etc. to create a rhythmically sophisticated folk music from an imaginary folk. The members of Cuddle Magic have collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Beyonce, Anais Mitchell, the David Wax Museum, Larkin Grimm, Joy Kills Sorrow, Fred Frith and legendary "third-stream" pianist Ran Blake.
Jocie Adams, of The Low Anthem, the wildly gifted multi-instrumentalist and folk mistress shares the bill. Accompanied by her lush band, she proffers her songs, from plaintive to elated, as whimsical glimpses of people and places both lost and found. The singing is strange and beautiful. The trumpeting tickles your ears. The bass holds you in its arms. The harmonies surround you like siren voices bouncing off the ocean. The band members are ever in-tune with each other, and they bring you in with them.
Alec K Redfearn is a musician and composer based out of Providence, Rhode Island. He has composed music for dance, theater, and film. His primary instrument is the accordion. Most notable is his body of compositional work for The Eyesores, a genre-bending ensemble of unorthodox instrumentation which spawned in the mid-1990s and whose music spans old-time Americana, Appalachian, folk and Eastern European music. Alec and The Eyesores will perform first.
This will be an extraordinary night of music. Hope you can join us.
