2nd performance in the STAND BY ME - Fall Showcase Series Sun., Sept. 30, 2012, 3-4 PM
Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco 150 Eureka Street
Singers of the Street (S.O.S.) - a San Francisco community choir of people affected by homelessness - celebrates its 2nd anniversary in a fun and personal multimedia showcase series including songs, dance, stories, photos, and video.
The fall showcase series, which opened at A.C.T.'s Costume Shop on September 8th, is a heartfelt and uplifting experience for audience members as they learn more about the lives of individual singers. Photographer Yolanda Mendoza chronicled the group's journey over the past year in a series of intimate photos and stories.
Members describe many reasons for singing with S.O.S., including camaraderie, the joy of singing, an inspirational outlet for creative expression, positive encouragement, and a family of friends.
"We provide a home-cooked meal for the singers after each rehearsal. Through singing together and sharing meals, we have become a caring community and family for one another," said artistic director and founder, Dr. Kathleen McGuire.
S.O.S.'s music video, "Stand By Me," featuring S.O.S. singing Ben E. King's classic hit, is backed up by local rock band: Critical Bliss. It was filmed on location in and around Union Square last May. "Stand By Me" was made especially for participation - by competitive selection - in the recent London Festival, part of the Olympic Games celebrations in July. The video was premiered at the Royal Opera House on July 2nd at a concert featuring 300 performers who have experienced homelessness. Videos were also shown from Japan and Australia. "Stand By Me" was the sole representation from the US.
Singers of the Street's first-ever rehearsal was on September 8th, 2010. The group now has more than 30 regular singers, and more than 60 have participated over the last two years. S.O.S. performs at least once a month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays, 10:30 am, at the City of Refuge: 1025 Howard Street. No auditions or prior choral experience are required. S.O.S.'s mission is to raise voices for justice, healing, and joy.
