Chopin Project Concert Saturday, March 4, 2017
World renowned pianist, Tong-Il Han in solo recital of works by Chopin.

Pianist Tong-Il Han has distinguished himself as a performer, recording artist, educator and juror in a musical career spanning more than sixty years. Han left his Korean homeland in 1954 at age twelve to study in the United States through a full scholarship at the Juilliard School of Music under Rosina Lhevinne. His years at Juilliard were followed by a period of study in London with Ilona Kabos. In 1957, Han performed at Carnegie Hall to critical acclaim. In November 1962 he performed at the White House for the President and Mrs. Kennedy.

In 1965 Han was declared the first prize winner in the 24th International Leventritt Piano Competition by a jury consisting of Rudolph Serkin, Leon Fleischer, Gary Graffman, Rudolph Firkusny, George Szell, William Steinberg and its chairman, Leonard Bernstein.

Tong-Il Han has since performed with major orchestras throughout the world including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Roayal Philharmonic, the Scottish National Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Monte Carlo Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Polish Radio National Orchestra, the Budapest Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Russian National Symphony.

Han has collaborated with many noted conductors, among them Bernard Haitink, Herbert Blomstedt, Edo de Waart, Raphael Frubeck de Burgos, Charles Dutoit, Lukas Foss, Eugene Jochum, Raymond Leppard, Robert Shaw, Stanislaw Skrowaczeski and David Zinman.

Mr. Han has taught at Indiana University, Illinois State University, University of North Texas and Boston University. Upon returning to Korea in 2005, he served as Dean of the College of Music at the University of Ulsan, and continued there as Chair Professor of Music.

Han has served as a jury member at several of the worlds most prestigious piano competitions including Seoul International, as chairman (2011), Busoni (2012), China International (2013), New York International, as chairman (2014), and Leeds International (2015).

As both concert artist and teacher, Tong-Il Han draws deeply on his Korean roots and Western musical heritage. For many years his foremost commitment has been to engender the artistic and humanistic development of the next generation of artists, teachers and audiences all over the world.
