The Great Storm of 1703 by Robert Poulter - EXTRA 3pm show
The Great Storm of 1703 is a combined New Model Theatre and puppet show that invites the audience to bring the entertainment to life.  It follows the Great Storm on the seas between the Goodwin Sands and Ramsgate and tells the story of the drama and devastation it brought to the region.

Your spirit guide for the evening will be Sir Clowdisley Shovell, Admiral of the Fleet.  He will be encouraging you to make waves; whip up a tempest; create a big noise; command a squadron!  The show features the longest revolving backdrop in over 200 years of toy theatre; we need your help to create an epic production.

This performance is a rare New Model Theatre super scale production whose 56 foot long background has skies based on watercolours of Ramsgate skies Robert has painted over the last 20 years.  Shipwright Dean Blackman produced the Great Storm mechanism and there will be sound making equipment to help you rustle up a helluva storm!

This show was commissioned by the East Kent Maritime Trust and has been performed in Margate and Ramsgate but also at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Robert Poulter has been producing extraordinary performances for many years.  With New Model Theatre, he has taken the traditional medium of toy theatre as a starting point and written and designed original productions which use movement, light and sound to create a new theatrical experience in miniature. Since 1980 his performances have taken place in many art galleries, museums and festivals, not only in the UK but also Germany, the USA, France and the Netherlands. Robert has also organised six major festivals of paper theatre, two juxtaposing live theatre with model theatre. He has also written, designed and directed three large open air spectacles and worked on numerous street theatre events. As a writer, illustrator and book designer, Mr. Poulter has a number of publications to his credit.

Tickets are available from this website and the Nice Things shop in the Custom House, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, CT11 8LP.  It is free to book your tickets prior to arrival and we suggest a ticket donation of £5 waged and £3 unwaged (or what ever you can afford) on the day.

The show will commence from 3pm upstairs at Archive and  where guests can purchase drinks and snacks downstairs in the Archive cafe. There will be a raffle for, among other things, a framed print of the beautiful photo by Chris Constantine of PERFUGIUM MISERIS, the iconic artwork in Ramsgate harbour.

As the numbers to view the performance is restricted, places will be allocated on a first come first served basis with priority given to guests who have pre-booked on this website or in the Nice Things shop but you can just turn up on the day.

Come and join us as we explore one of the most dramatic events in Ramsgate history in a truly unique way.

This is fifth in our highly successful programme of fundraising events for the temporary artwork PERFUGIUM MISERIS, commissioned by Ramsgate Arts for the 2016 Arts Festival.  We aim to create a seed fund for a permanant version of this, Ramsgate's harbour motto meaning "refuge for those in need".  Do please come and support us for yet another fun and historic event.
