Event
Judas Maccabaeus
Written in 1746 to celebrate the English monarchy's successful suppression of the Jacobite rebellion, the choral-orchestral masterpiece features thrilling songs ("Sound an Alarm," "Arm, Arm Ye Brave,") choruses ("See, the Conq'ring Hero Comes," "Hallelujah, Amen,") along with an instrumental overture and stirring marches.
In defense of "laws, religion, and liberty," Judas marches on Jerusalem to reclaim the Temple and independence for the Jewish people. The work concludes with a Festival of Thanksgiving: the Feast of Lights that is still observed each year at Hanukkah.
