Rodrigo & Haydn
The Valley Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Michael H. Arshagouni, continues its' tradition of high-quality, low-cost classical music with this very special concert featuring two monuments of music: Rodrigo's evocative and popular Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and Haydn's final statement on symphonic music with his Symphony No.104 in D.
Composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939, the Concierto de Aranjuez is, arguably, the most popular and often performed concerto of the twentieth century, and has featured frequently in movies, television shows and commercials. The significance of this work established Rodrigo's reputation as one of the most important Spanish composers of the last one hundred years. Our featured soloist, Atticus Travis McKittrick, recently won the nationally competitive Guitar Foundation of America's instrument award.
As the final symphonic work by the "father" of the genre, Joseph Haydn's Symphony No.104 in D "London" thoroughly pleased audience, musicians and composer at its' premiere. From the grand introduction of the first movement through the final chords of the exuberant finale, this work is a testament to the riches "Papa" Haydn brought to the genre and to art music.
In addition to these to seminal works, the VSO will perform Mendelssohn's early String Symphony No.5, written when the composer was only 12 years old. The brilliance of the writing reveals the youthful genius of a prodigious composer.
You will not want to miss this concert of great classical music!
