Unidos da Filadelfia / What Cheer? Brigade
Providence RIs What Cheer? Brigade is a 19-piece roving brass band that has played in trees, ferris wheels, zoos, grocery stores, bus stops, parties, farms, bars, libraries, soccer fields, cemeteries, and elementary school playgrounds since early 2005. Luddite hardcore, they like to call it. They play instrumental (no singer) party music with a taste of Bollywood, the Balkans, New Orleans, Samba, Hip Hop and more. The music owes its history to the spread of brass throughout the World through military conflict and colonialism. Brass sounds got mashed up with local rhythms and traditions and there was a world brass explosion; theyre part of the fallout.
Unidos da Filadelfia (Philadelphia United) is a community-based samba school modeled after the Carnaval parade organizations of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. Founded in 2005, the schools mission is to spread the joy and excitement of Brazilian percussion through music education and performance. Members of the school have the opportunity to play the traditional percussion instruments and learn the rhythmic styles of Brazilian Carnaval, and to perform at various community events. This event will include both a regular concert and extensive opportunities for audience participation.
