Fourthcity has hosted battles in 5 different US cities, in search of the best to compete in the annual Laptop Battle Championships. Competitors from Seattle, Portland, Vancouver BC, Philadelphia & Salt Lake City will go head to head in sonic battles for the title of Laptop Battle Champion.
Question: What happens when technology becomes dirt cheap, all the
software you would ever need ends up at your fingertips and the entire
catalog of recorded sound through human history is free for your taking &
manipulating?
Answer: The Laptop Battle Championships!
On December 9th, a diverse group of technically proficient laptop jockeys will square off at
Chop Suey for one of the most challenging cutting edge cultural phenomenon's
sweeping the nation. The battle revolves of contestants using only their
laptop soundcard to musically outperform each other in a series of
elimination rounds.
Judged by a panel of prominent music industry
professionals on performance, originality, sound quality, vibe, and crowd
reaction. The outcome of each battle is decided out of a total score of 10
in all categories.
This sonic melee promises to be an unprecedented
unpredictable night of high drama, high-tech hijinx, and even higher
volume. Modeled after DMC DJ battles, the laptop battles began last year
on the west coast spear headed by Kris Moon of the Fourth city arts
collective.

What is a Laptop Battle you ask?
It's simple. 8 musicians compete in a double elimination tournament to see who can rock a laptop the hardest. Contestants are paired up at random and entered into a bracket. Each battler has 3 minutes to show the crowd that he/she does not suck. The winner of each round continues on to the next round until a single champion is crowned for the night.
What can be used in the Battle?
A laptop and a mouse/pointing device. 1 midi controller is permitted.
How do you know who wins?
Crowd response and a panel of judges will determine the winner of each round. The more you can hype the crowd or wow them with your skills, the better chance you have of winning. If you look like you are reading MySQL code or updating your blog, you probably won't stand a chance. This competition is designed to showcase the performance aspect of playing music with a laptop.
