WINTER FEASTS

Saturday, December 3, 2016, 8 pm
St. James Cathedral
804 Ninth Avenue
Seattle, Washington  98104

The Europe of ages past was awash in winter holidays that served to drive away the winter gloom and give people plenty of reason to celebrate. Most holidays had religious associations, but feasts such as St. Nicholas, St. Thomas Becket, the Immaculate Conception, the Nativity and the Feast of the 3 Kings the 12th day of Christmas--were celebrated at court and in the street as well as in church. Join the Medieval Womens Choir as we celebrate the Winter Feasts!

The Medieval Women's Choir is a Resident Choral Ensemble at Saint James Cathedral.

PILGRIM'S PROGRESS

Sunday, March 12, 2017, 4pm
University Temple United Methodist Church
1415 NE 43rd Street
Seattle, WA 98105

In an age when foreign travel was rare, the thing that inspired legions of believers to undertake long, and sometimes harrowing journeys was pilgrimage. Well-established pilgrimage routes stretched from Scandanavia, Britain and Eastern Europe to holy shrines in Compostela, Rome, and the Holy Land.

Pilgrims would have encountered a wide range of music both familiar and exotic: music for court and chapel, music for dancing, and music celebrating love. Follow the progress of the Medieval Womens Choir as we discover the music of pilgrimage.

THE WHITE LILY

Saturday, June 3, 2017, 8 pm
Trinity Parish
609 8th Ave
Seattle, WA 98104

The medieval church designated Mary as the mediatrix who could intercede with her son on behalf of humankind. The rise of her cult led to a staggering outpouring of song as believers turned to their Blessed Mother to arrange forgiveness and an eternity in heaven.

Songs for Mary eventually appeared everywhere: grafted onto popular troubadour songs, inserted into preexisting liturgical music, and contributing to decidedly secular love songs. A program of Marian music is a true cross-section of medieval music and a window into the medieval heart.
