Ojai Film Society presents: The Man Who Knew Infinity
Based on a true story, the film begins in colonial India, where we meet Ramanujan (played by Dev Patel) a poor, but intuitive mathematician. His scribbled equations ultimately earn him an invitation to the distinguished halls of Cambridge, where the onslaught of WWI is edging ever closer to the campus. The dramatic conflicts of class and colonial attitudes, and rational and intuitive forms of knowledge play out in the ivory tower, while the pursuit of knowledge is finally halted by a military encampment on campus that literally infects and destroys any equations of "infinity."
These great themes are brilliantly portrayed through the relationship between Ramanujan and his mentor, G.H.Hardy (Jeremy Irons). While this partnership changed the history of mathematics, in this film, Patel and Irons capture the very dynamics of intellectual and historical change in intimate scenes of emotional and psychological growth.
