Ojai Film Society and the Ojai Art Center present: West of the West with director Brent Sumner
THIS IS THE FIRST OF TWO THEMATICALLY LINKED SCREENINGS AT THE OJAI ART CENTER THEATER ON CONSECUTIVE DAYS.
Indigenous history collides with the modern world in this remarkable documentary about the Channel Islands from Santa Barbara filmmakers Brent Sumner, Peter Seaman and Sam Tyler. As the Chumash elders tell it, the islands were a landing point for the first people to lay claim to the North American continent, traveling from Asia some 13,000 years ago. From the Arlington Springs man of Santa Rosa Island to the Lone Woman of San Nicolas (inspiration for Island of the Blue Dolphins) to the seafarers who laid claim to the islands in the expedition era of Columbus, this fascinating film is rich with the textures of archeology; mythology; and native, marine and mission history.
