Dough
Sunday, Sept. 18 at 5 pm at Matilija Auditorium:
In a modern world plagued by anger, fear, xenophobia, racism and intolerance of religious differences, Dough serves as a sweet antidote to these age-old afflictions.
Award-winning actor Jonathan Pryce appears as Nat Dayan, a curmudgeonly, aging widower who rigidly clings to his daily life as a kosher-bakery owner in the East End of London. Struggling to keep his tired business afloat, Nat reluctantly hires a teenage, black, Muslim apprentice, Ayyash (Jerome Holder), who lives in a tenement with his mother. One day, Ayyash accidentally drops his side-job cannabis into the challah mixing dough, literally sending salesand the neighborhood localssky high!
Through the burgeoning trust and ensuing mishaps facing the two leads, viewers also see that Dough is not perfect. The film can be pat and predictable, but is also warmhearted, sweet and witty, demonstrating that it is still possible to overcome prejudice and form unbreakable bonds when least expected.
