Songs of Love: Amor de mi Alma

Every day we experience how love stirs the heart and promotes connection with the people in our lives. Greeks recognized the way we care for family, lovers, friends, God, the world, and ourselves as different expressions of love, and created three distinct terms: Agápe, Éros, and Philia. Join Mount Royal Kantorei as we explore these Greek words through song.

Agápe is the love for those dearest to us, like a spouse or a child. In Christianity, the term is also used to describe the love of God for man, or mans love for God. Two renditions of "Ubi Caritas" speak to the powerful love of God, while "Seal Lullaby" displays the gentle love of a mother for her child.

Éros is intimate love or passion, or appreciation of beauty. The titular song, "Amor de mi Alma" by Z. Randall Stroope, expresses a deep connection between two souls, wherein the other is their very reason for being. "5 Hebrew Love Songs" and "A Boy and a Girl," both by Eric Whitacre, tell stories about the unfolding of a relationship.

Philia describes a platonic love, between extended family members, friends, or for the world at large. The modern classic "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," portrays this love through empathy and support.
