Speak: From Syria to Harlem, this program combines the spoken word and chamber music. How do the words of HOME impact your musical journey? In the first work on this program, we jump into the nights of Harlem where African-American composer, Valerie Coleman, brings the words of Langston Hughes to life with electric rhythms influenced by jazz. With Syrian-American Roustoms telling of an Arabic folk tale set to music, we hear the influences of the traditional sounds of Lebanon, Palestine and Syria.
