Gyorgy Ligeti Ballad and Dance for two violins
Adam Maness World Premiere (commission)
Antonin Dvorak Terzetto, Op. 74
Johannes Brahms Clarinet Quintet in b minor, Op. 115
Essence: We ask in this program, what are the aspects of a homeland defining its true impact on you, the individual? This program will feature our first commission of the season by Adam Maness, and he is creating a chamber work inspired by St. Louis. With Ligeti, we will hear a composer released from the constraints of communism finally free to express the rhythm of his homeland. Dvorak is the original ethnomusicologist collecting songs of home on recordings and we will hear the influences on his compositions. We think of Brahms as one of the purists to reject the idea of program music, buteven he could not escape the songs of home in his Clarinet Quintet.
